Pennr is a free fuel price comparison app for iOS and Android, and a public Fuel Price Index, built on the UK Government’s Fuel Finder scheme — the statutory open-data programme (SI 2025/1356) that went live on 2 February 2026. Every UK forecourt selling petrol or diesel to the public must report price changes within 30 minutes. Pennr reads that feed every 30 minutes and publishes the results openly: national petrol and diesel averages, the spread between the cheapest and dearest forecourts, regional breakdowns and the motorway premium — all on a page anyone can quote, chart or download. Today those averages are computed across 6,300+ forecourts reporting fresh prices.

The national fuel averages most outlets quote are published weekly. Pennr recomputes the Index every 30 minutes from stations whose latest report falls within the five-day ranking window.
As of 18:36, Thursday, 30 July 2026, the UK average is 159.8p a litre for petrol (E10) and 178.8p for diesel (B7).
Two stations a few miles apart can charge very different prices for the same fuel. Because Pennr holds live prices for forecourts right across the country, it can put a number on that gap directly — the spread between what the cheapest and dearest stations charge — a dispersion figure the weekly national series simply cannot show. The Competition and Markets Authority has said greater price transparency should narrow this gap, and tracks it; Pennr measures it in the open, every half hour.
As of 18:36, Thursday, 30 July 2026, most drivers pay between 153.7p and 166.9p for petrol — a spread of 13.2p a litre for the same fuel.
Motorway service stations are consistently dearer than forecourts off the motorway, but the exact gap is rarely put in a single number. Pennr computes it live: the difference between the average price at motorway services and the average everywhere else, from the same feed — a figure no weekly national survey publishes.
As of 18:36, Thursday, 30 July 2026, petrol at motorway services averages 19.0p a litre more than at forecourts off the motorway.
