Who We Are

Pennr is a fuel price comparison app for the United Kingdom. We help you find the cheapest fuel near you by showing live prices from stations in your area.

What Data We Collect

Location Data

With your permission, Pennr uses your location to find nearby stations and calculate distances. Location and selected area information are sent to our service when needed for these features. If you use Ask Pennr, area names and relevant station information may also be sent to OpenAI to answer your question. Saved alert areas are associated with your device so we can send relevant notifications.

You can revoke location permission in your device settings and choose an area manually. Pennr does not require background location access.

Device Identifiers and Notifications

Pennr creates a random device identifier, stored in the iOS Keychain, which can survive reinstallation. Our service uses it to associate your saved vehicles, favourites and notification preferences with your device. If you enable notifications, we also store a push notification token to deliver them. These identifiers are not advertising identifiers.

Your Car

When you add a car, we send its registration number to the DVSA MOT History service and store the registration, vehicle details and returned MOT history against your device identifier. We also store preferences you save, such as a renewal month, to provide car information and reminders. You can remove a saved car in the app; this deletes its active vehicle record from our service.

Ask Pennr

Questions and recent conversation context are sent through our service to OpenAI to generate replies. Context can include your selected area, fuel type, stations and optional car details: make, model, year, fuel family, tank size, fuel economy and MOT expiry month. We do not automatically include your registration number in this AI context. Information you type yourself is included, so avoid entering information you do not want processed.

Your conversation is saved on your device. Our service temporarily caches replies for retry recovery and keeps usage records associated with a verified Apple transaction-derived identifier to enforce allowances and prevent abuse. Clearing Ask history removes the local conversation and requests deletion of the server reply cache, but does not reset usage records or recall requests already sent to OpenAI.

We disable OpenAI response storage for these requests. OpenAI may still retain API content for abuse monitoring under its data controls; disabling response storage is not a promise of zero retention. See OpenAI API data controls.

Purchases and Subscriptions

Apple handles payment. RevenueCat receives purchase and subscription records associated with an anonymous customer identifier to validate access, sync entitlements and restore purchases. Pennr does not receive your payment card details. Our service also verifies signed Apple transaction information to determine Ask Pennr access and allowances.

Usage Analytics (PostHog)

We use PostHog to collect usage analytics. This helps us understand how the app is used so we can improve it.

• Data collected: screens viewed, buttons tapped, features used, session duration.
• No advertising identifiers (IDFA or GAID) are collected or used.
• No cross-app tracking.

Crash Reports (Sentry)

We use Sentry to capture crash reports and error logs. This helps us identify and fix bugs quickly.

• Data collected: device model, operating system version, app version, stack traces, and error context.

Accounts and Advertising

You do not need to create a Pennr account to use the app. We do not collect advertising identifiers or use your data for cross-app advertising tracking. If you contact us, we receive the contact details and information you provide in that correspondence.

Third-Party Processors

We use the following third-party services to operate the app:

Vehicle lookups use the DVSA MOT History service. Apple provides payment processing and push notification delivery for the iOS app.

Price data is sourced from the UK Government Fuel Finder Scheme (Department for Energy Security and Net Zero) and community contributions. This data does not include any personal information.

Legal Basis for Processing

Under UK GDPR, we rely on the following legal bases:

• Legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f)) — for usage analytics and crash reporting, to improve the reliability and performance of the app.
• Contract performance (Article 6(1)(b)) — to provide the features you request, including nearby fuel, saved vehicles, Ask Pennr and subscription access.

Your Rights

Under UK GDPR, you have the following rights:

• Right of access — request a copy of any personal data we hold about you.
• Right to rectification — request correction of inaccurate personal data.
• Right to erasure — request deletion of your personal data.
• Right to data portability — request your data in a machine-readable format.
• Right to object — object to processing based on legitimate interests.
• Right to restrict processing — request that we limit how we use your data.

Contact us to exercise these rights. Because Pennr uses device and transaction identifiers rather than account logins, we may need information to locate the relevant records and verify your request. Do not send passwords or payment card details.

Data Retention and Deletion

Saved vehicle records remain until you remove them. Other saved preferences and device records support the features you enable; contact us to request deletion. Uninstalling the app does not by itself delete server records or the Keychain device identifier.

Ask replies expire from retry recovery after 15 minutes and are removed by scheduled cleanup, or when you clear Ask history. Usage and abuse-prevention records are retained separately, including the lifetime introductory allowance count. Subscription records are retained to support entitlement checks and restoration. Analytics, diagnostics and provider records follow the applicable service retention settings; contact us about a specific record or deletion request.

International Transfers

Our service providers may process data outside the UK or European Economic Area. Their privacy policies explain their processing locations and international transfer safeguards. Contact us for information about transfers relevant to your data.

Children

Pennr is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with information, please contact us at [email protected] and we will delete it promptly.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. For material changes, we will provide notice within the app. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
